Book Cover Design
Brief: Create a set of 2-3 book covers that are cohesive and effectively portray the content of the chosen material.
Concept: These designs are for a set of manuals used in the three week World Chess Championship in Dubai, UAE, in 2021. One manual is for the arbiters, containing all of the pertinent FIDE certified rules and regulations, and a general competition schedule. The second manual is for the competitors, which includes in-depth information for participant processes of the competition, information on the Grandmasters who will be attending, and general information on the host city.
Design: The black and white color palette references the iconic chess board, the highlighted playing field for the competition. The abstraction reflects the almost infinite possibilities in how a game can be played, and how each move mutates the possibility landscape. While the board has been abstracted, it remains in the realm of precise geometry, alluding to the strict logic and calculation that is required to be a successful chess player. The letterforms of the typeface pair well with the composition, with their geometric quirks that lend personality while still remaining analytical.
